Resolution 5: Establishing a Graduate Degree Program in Atmospheric Science

Passed: October 13, 1999

Sponsor: Committee on Academic Programs and Policies

Senate Discussions: September 1999

Resolution

WHEREAS, a graduate degree program in Atmospheric Science has been approved by the Graduate School, and

WHEREAS, the Committee on Academic Programs and Policies has also approved the new graduate degree program,

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Faculty Senate approves establishing a graduate degree program in Atmospheric Science and urges the Administration to place this on the agenda of the Board of Trustees for consideration.

RATIONALE: At the present, graduate students pursuing Atmospheric Science studies receive instructions in a number of fields: Astronomy and Space Sciences; Civil and Environmental Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering; and Soil, Crop and Atmospheric Sciences (SCAS). Establishment of this graduate degree program would have an adverse effect only on the number of degrees granted in SCAS. It would have the positive effect of enhancing Cornell’s ability to recruit the best trained students interested in pursuing graduate degrees in Atmospheric Science.
