CAPP review of the CIS Proposals for use of the Professor of Practice and the Research Professor titles
The unanimous feedback[minus one CAPP member that recused themselves for being from CIS] has been that the proposals look consistent to prior proposals reviewed by the committee. It was noted that there was appreciation that there was clear discussions of the limited (but well-defined) conditions under which individuals holding such appointments can compete for tenure-track appointments. Additionally, there was appreciation that the proposals were well articulated and precise.
I did want to share one additional comment shared by a member to the extent it is informative in some way:
Anyone who has managed to thrive and recoup one’s full salary via grants, etc, over the period of time needed to reach Full Research Professor stage is likely more valuable and productive than most tenured Full Professors. It seems to me (even as a tenure system skeptic) that such accomplished Research Professors should be strongly considered for transition to the tenured ranks with hard salaries, so long as they accept the accompanying responsibilities (teaching, admin)!

Professor Eve DeRosa
Dean of Faculty
305 Day Hall
Dear Dean DeRosa:
On behalf of the Bowers CIS faculty, I am submitting the attached proposal that would authorize use of the Research Professor title.
We believe that our proposal complies with the enabling legislation. Indeed, it is modeled after the RP proposals that have already been approved by the Faculty Senate:
Having this title will enable us to compete more effectively with schools like Stanford, Berkeley, and U Washington that have been using the research professor title for a number of years.
The proposal was approved by our faculty as follows:
Faculty type | Approve | Disapprove | Abstain | DNV |
---|
Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty | 90 | 0 | 2 | 3 |
RTE Faculty | 16 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Professor Charlie Van Loan (cfv3@cornell.edu) is available to answer any questions that may arise during the review by the Committee on Academic Programs and Policy.
Sincerely,
Kavita Bala,
Dean, Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science
