I am concerned about the Latin Honors proposal. Having a uniform system across colleges is a vast improvement. However, I don’t like having honors solely based on grades. It seems to me that honors theses, honors in research are being short changed and should be a part of the honors designation. Grades are given on the transcript and summarized as a GPA. Shouldn’t Honors recognize contributions to scholarship that go beyond a high GPA?
I am not convinced that having a uniform GPA is appropriate either. The current system allows for real differences in Collleges. Some colleges have lower GPAs simply because all their courses are tougher.
I agree that honors and research and thesis should be recognized, but GPA is GPA, and they are recognized in some colleges.
Some autonomy should be left to Colleges on how they grade. Maybe honors should be based on a consistent % of students across colleges rather than a consistent GPA.
