Retirement Advisory Council

About

Cornell Academics and Professors Emeriti (CAPE) has established a Retirement Advisory Council composed of retired faculty to help guide colleagues who are close to or newly retired.

The council’s goal is to facilitate the development of confidential relationships between retired faculty and colleagues in the process of retiring who may need some guidance. Advisors who have already experienced retirement from Cornell, act as a sounding board for prospective University faculty and RTE faculty retirees.

The council is not a substitute for the programs offered by Cornell’s HR Services and Transitions Center that focus on financial planning, benefits, health insurance, etc. Rather, the council complements HR by focusing on the social, professional, and personal aspects of transitioning to retirement.

Some Typical Questions Include:

  •  What’s it like to retire?
  •  How do I negotiate with my chair or dean regarding resources, phased retirement, etc.?
  •  How do I leave a high-status career with my ego intact?
  •  How do I remain professionally active if I wish to do so?
  •  How can I maintain my connection to Cornell?
  •  How can I strengthen my connection with the Ithaca community through volunteering?
